2025 Writers Guild of Canada Award Nominee!

Exciting news today! I’ve been nominated for a 2025 Writers Guild of Canada Award for my work on the series Popularity Papers — the episode I wrote with showrunner extraordinaire and wonderful human Vivian Lin.

I remember attending my very first WGC Awards way back in 2013. Check out the lo-res pics from that day taken on my ancient iPhone:

A friend who had found some success in the industry gave me their ticket, and so I dressed up and tried my very best to fit into this room of professional writers — all the while feeling a) sick to my stomach with nerves and b) uncertain if I’d ever break in as a television writer. I had produced the first season of Gay Nerds by that point, but was still working a day job and a few years away from a professional writers’ room.

And in 2013, the industry had more staff jobs than in 2025 but fewer access points. Now, I recognize that breaking into the entertainment industry is never easy, but at the time there was really only the CFC and one (brand new!) program dedicated to diverse writers. Social media was new-ish and getting your foot in the door meant… well, sneaking into a Guild event.

That night, I glommed on to writer/directors Lynne Kamm and Pat Mills (thank god for our community) and had a fantastic time. And using the momentum of that event, I continued to chip away at my samples, apply to programs, and get my name out there.

All of which is to say getting nominated for a Guild Award is a real honour. I’m proud to be a working writer and grateful for every single day that I get to do this wild job. And I never forget the folks along the way who took a chance on me. This industry is really an endless cycle of people taking a chance on you — project by project.

Excited to party on April 25th!
